what do you think would happen if i washed wedding dress in machine, then air dried?
i am out of work right now and tight on money, i was thinking i could wash it on a gentle cycle in cold water and air dry. It has dirt around the bottom and on the butt from when i sat on a picnic table...it is made of that fake satin stuff that typical bridal dresses are made of, some medium beading at the top, and two layers of tulle...
Unless a wedding gown says specifically "Satin" on the inside label, then it's safe to wash it. All it is is Polyester, which can be put in the washer. There are just various weaves of Polyester made to imitate finer fabrics. Try hand washing it instead, squeezing soapy water through the dress with your hands. And it's going to take a long time to air dry. Just a pinch of soap and cold water, you don't want it to be too sudsy.
Most of the time these types of clothes say "dry clean only" because of all the intricate work they have on them, such as beading and little pieces of fabric. Another reason is to keep the cleaners in business. Many clothes that say "dry clean only" you can wash safely in your home.
You can also try spot cleaning it too, instead of submersing the entire dress in water.
