U.S. Air Force ROTC FT?
I am currently a non contracted U.S. Army ROTC cadet and I am transferring to a school with an U.S. Air Force ROTC program which I have been told by DET command that I will be able to join in the spring semester as a sophmore.
To catch up in "Air" classes and labs will I need to attend field training? and how hard is it to get a slot/deadline? or will I have to add a year to my studies? I am doing well based on GPA and PT tests.
Thank you
All cadets, regardless of when they joined, must attend field training between their sophomore and junior year. (and in some cases between their junior and senior year for extenuating circumstances)
There used to be a program as a part of field training called FTAP which was just one week of academics, but due to budget cuts they are no longer offering that, so all academic classes must be made up at your own university. Because of this I am not sure exactly how you will make up all of the classes or if they even need to be made up before going to field training. Most likely you will just have to double up classes and take both the freshman and sophomore classes together. In past years I have known many people that join one or two semesters before FT and graduate on time.
As far as how hard it is to get a field training allocation, it is starting to get selective. If your GPA and PT scores are good, just be as active as you can in your detachment and volunteer is much as possible so you can get a good commanders ranking (which is a huge part of getting selected)
If you want to add an extra year to your studies, it is done by people all the time, but it probably is not necessary.
Hope this helped, if you still have questions feel free to email me, or the detachment staff will also be glad to help.
