Why is black acceptable for men, bridesmaids, guests, and women attending formal events but not for a bride?
I'm not wearing a black dress to get married in but I'm curious as to the double standard of why it is considered festive in most formal occasions, but if a bride were to consider it, then the world is about to end for some people.
White has nothing to do with purity or virginity although many folks throughout the years have twisted the original symbolism of wealth (which was the reason Queen Victoria introduced it) into something else entirely that doesn't even remotely resemble it. In some cultures, white is considered ominous since it is color of death. Red is considered festive for a wedding in many cultures around the world but traditionally in the US it is equated with prostitution and some people still associate it with such and tell a bride she's not allowed to wear it unless she wants to scandalize herself and everyone else at the wedding. If the bride loves the color and looks great in it (white/ivory is actually not flattering on many women) then why does it matter?
I agree about the double standard. Black is usually (In the U.S anyway) said to be a very classy color. "What should I wear to this party?" "Wear black, it's classy, elegant, classic...etc"
But if a bride wants a black wedding dress most people are opposed to the idea. Suddenly black goes from being classy and elegant to gloomy and morbid.
I think it all has to do with tradition. I'm not sure how white was twisited into a purity thing. In Chinese, Japanese and Indian cultures white is the death color...I thinka nyway...that's what I've heard.
People assosicate black with funerals and death...but everytime I see a bride all decked out in white with the veil covering her face, I think of ghosts.
