Invisible zip in a satin dress... HELP!!?
I'm currently making my sisters wedding dress. Everything was fine, the pattern i made fitted great and then she picked out the finest satin fabric i have ever seen and I am having big problems! My biggest concern is fitting the invisible zip and roll hemming the flipping thing! Any tips?? (or am i just going to have to make it out of calico... ha ha ha!)
Do not resort to calico's just yet!!
The dress should be fitted and make any alterations before putting the zipper in place. Do this by pressing back the seam allowance wear the zipper would be placed. Have her put the dress on .. then pin or baste the zipper seam closed.
Look for other places that may need to have a final fit or final alteration. Make these alterations. If the seam line or zipper line needs to be altered to get the fit correct , then pin mark wear the new final seam or where the zipper should come together ( pin marking is using pins parallel to the seam line , penetrating only the single layer of fabric. You may need to trim some excess to get the final 5/8 seam allowance.
Tip: If you do not have an invisible zipper foot .... make the investment ... it is worth it.
I have not had too much luck on a rolled hem on satin, maybe others can help with this one. I have resorted to just hand stitching the hem. It seems to end up with a wavy edge when I try it on satin.
You are to be commended on this effort.
