How do I sew a strapless sweetheart neckline?
I am turning a t-shirt into a Halloween costume. I want the neckline to be in a sweetheart shape and strapless. For the most part I have the pattern down, but my question is about the strapless part. If it's a t-shirt, how will it stay up? Is there some kind of technique I can use? I'm not talking tape, but a sewing technique rather.
Elastic will not hold this up. You will be tugging on it constantly.
Strapless garments stay up because they fit really tight at the waist and hip, and have boning and interfacing in them that is stiff. That is the sewing technique.
A strapless dress does not hang off the bust. It is so snug at the waist that it can't fall down, and so firm it can hold it's shape. If you set a strapless bodice on a table, it would stand up by itself.
Can you use clear bra straps to hold it up? Or you could safety pin it to a purchased strapless bra? The bra would have a special tacky sort of strip inside that clings to your skin better.
