What dress should I wear to the barbecue?
We have a barbecue party, and a ball afterwards, and I can't decide what dress to wear. For the ball I will wear my apple-green silk dress with festoons of ecru lace. But the barbecue? There will be a man who I want to impress the most. I am in love with him, and he is in love with me, but there are rumours that he wants to marry Melanie. She will be at the party, so I want to look good. The rose organdie is becoming, but I had worn it last summer when Melanie visited here and she'd be sure to remember it, and might be catty enough to mention it. The black bombazine sets off my white skin superbly, but it does make me look a trifle elderly. The lavender barred muslin is beautiful, but it had never suited my type, makes me look like a schoolgirl. The green plaid taffeta with flounces is my favourite but there is a grease spot on the front. There is the green sprigged muslin, but it has very low neck and only tiny sleeves like a dancing dress. What should I wear?
He's not the kind of man who will give a second glance to your clothes. Perhaps you should set your sights elsewhere.
P.S. I bet you could wear upholstery or drapery and still look very becoming.
